Large Urban Developments in Cyprus and Israel: Planning Context, Challenges and Realities

In the past few decades, urban development changed its form and scale. Large urban developments (LUDs) are project-centered, market-led initiatives, which have replaced long-term, comprehensive planning as the primary means for contemporary urban development. Although the urban realities entailed by this model of urban development have not been fully deciphered, the large scale and the generic reproduction of such projects is being duplicated almost everywhere. LUDs change the form of cities, their functions and their possible uses by users. The Colloquium aims to start a debate on the challenges and realities of LUDs by shedding light on the contexts of Cyprus and Israel.
