Abstract:The
IET Wiring Regulations continue to evolve as technology changes and new operational and safety requirements are developed. In the 16th edition there was no mention of photo voltaics, electric vehicles or surge protection, and RCDs were a relatively new thing. Now all these things are everyday items and we are looking at further new technologies such as LED lighting, DC systems and “power over Ethernet”. The new 18th edition of BS 7671 has been revised to align with the current IEC 60364 standard and some CENELEC and UK modifications added. The lecture will introduce the 18th edition and discuss changes from the 17th edition and new developments and the reasons behind them.
Speaker:Leon
Markwell initially worked for the (then) Institution of Electrical Engineers on the 16th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations in the 1990’s, which had just become BS 7671. He left the IEE to pursue other work but retained a seat on the JPEL/64 committees that produced and agreed the text of the Wiring Regulations through the amendments of both the 16th and 17th editions. He then re-joined the (now) IET Technical Regulations staff in 2015 and has worked on the preparation of the 18th edition of BS 7671 as the secretary to JPEL/64 committee sub-committees A (Inspection and testing) and B (Thermal effects). He has also revised Guidance notes 2 and 3 for the 18th edition and revised the IET “Electricians Guide to Emergency Lighting”. Leon Markwell is a registered “European Engineer” (Eur Ing), a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the IET.
